From the bestselling author of Weetzie Bat comes a stunning reimagining of Homer's Odyssey, exploring love, queerness, and the devastation of the environment, set in post-apocalyptic Los Angeles.

Block's trademark magical realism works. . . . There's something encouraging about seeing four queer kids on an epic journey across the post-apocalyptic American Southwest. --Kirkus Reviews

After the Earth Shaker, which all but destroyed Los Angeles, seventeen-year-old Penelope (Pen) sets out into the wasteland in search of her family, her journey guided by a tattered copy of Homer's Odyssey. Soon she begins to realize her own abilities and strength as she faces false promises of safety, the cloned giants who feast on humans, and a madman who wishes her dead. On her voyage, Pen learns to tell stories that reflect her strange visions, while she and her fellow surivors navigate the dangers that lie in wait.

In her signature lyrical style, Francesca Lia Block has created a world that is beautiful in its destruction and as frightening as it is lovely. Love in the Time of Global Warming has shades of science fiction, fantasy, eco-fiction, and dystopic disaster.

Praise for Love in the Time of Global Warming:

A Top Ten ALA Rainbow Project Book

A] compelling apocalyptic survival story with four LGBTQ teens. --Common Sense Media

Francesca Lia Block is the imaginative bestselling author of Weetzie Bat; she brings a radiant, illuminating world of death, destruction and adventure in her novel Love in the Time of Global Warming. . . . Block will make you see, smell, hear, taste and feel Pen's story, and she will surely wisk you away into an inspiring, fantastical, Dali-esque dream world that you will never forget. --Teenreads

Francesca Lia Block has made a trademark of twining myth and reality so snugly it's difficult to figure out where one ends and the other begins. . . . This is a fine adventure story. . . . You'll be thinking about it for days afterward. --Bookpage

Told in Block's distinctive whimsical style, Love in the Time of Global Warming stands out as a uniquely poignant allegory of self-acceptance. . . . The camaraderie between these four queer teens searching for a home together amid the rubble is palpable. --TOR.com

This a beautiful book. . . . Perfect] for teens that have grown out of fairytale books but would still like to escape the real world, and also for queer teens, because they may be able to see themselves reflected in the heroes of this story, which is how it should be. --GayYA.org

A post-apocalyptic setting awash with danger brings an exhilarating twist to Block's signature mashup of rock-and-roll urchins and high literature. --Publishers Weekly, starred review

"Block writes about the real Los Angeles better than anyone since Raymond Chandler." --The New York Times Book Review

"This Halloween, bypass the usual vampires and werewolves of teen fiction for what lurks between the covers of Francesca Lia Block's brutal, beautifully written Love in the Time of Global Warming. Those fanged and furry creatures are but a sugar rush compared with Block's genetically engineered giants as she treats us to a dystopian tale tricked out in her signature lush prose." --The Washington Post

"The dreamlike quality of the writing, typical of the author's works, functions well with the fantastical elements of the story, which is solid and dense in its descriptions. This is an excellent title for students who have read Homer's Odyssey as well as readers who enjoy a mix of fantasy and reality." --School Library Journal

"The result is original and, no surprise, gracefully written. Magic is no stranger to Block's world, nor is her signature poetic sensibility. And love, in its many varieties and forms, is celebrated, as always." --Booklist

A Match Made in Heaven
Format: Hardcover
Marjorie Woollacott has provided the world with an incredible opportunity. The opportunity of merging two parallel universes; the scientific exploration of the brain, mind, consciousness, and awareness with the inner journey of one’s spiritual path of yoga and meditation. Marjorie has had her feet firmly walking the path of science and meditation for over 40 years. She gives her readers what they have been wanting for decades which is a readable resource to understand the complex scientific research of neuroscience and to understand the ancient texts of yoga and meditation. She eloquently explains to the readers how these two worlds were so far apart, and are now communicating and working together to solve the glorious mysteries of the mind, the brain and meditation. This is a match made in heaven. Deep exploration of the mental and spiritual bodies allow the readers to revel in these mysteries and begin to appreciate the unlimited vastness of a human birth. I loved this book and bought the Kindle version, but now realize this is a book I need to have in print so I can easily revisit sections which are worth future contemplation.

An award-winning book exploring the relationship of science and spirituality
Format: Hardcover
This highly engaging, award-winning book is the best introduction for non-specialists that I’ve come across that offers an intelligent alternative to the existential meaningless implicit in the materialist paradigm. Woollacott, a recently retired neuroscientist, takes readers on her quest to reconcile the objective world of her scientific study with the meditation experiences of her personal life. For most of her career, Woollacott kept her subjective experiences separated from scientific work. Having now retired from active scientific research, she now explains in this book how she came to construct a coherent worldview which synthesizes quantum physics, Hindu philosophy, and her own meditation practice. Having read numerous books in this genre, I most appreciated her intelligent exposition of scientific studies for the non-specialist, explaining how she came to favor panpsychism over materialism, all framed within her own life-long journey towards answering life’s biggest questions. I will gladly return to this book frequently as I try to help students consider an alternative to the materialist paradigm.

An Indispensable Guide to the Scientific Argument about the Primacy of Consciousness throughout the Universe!
Format: Hardcover
I couldn't put down this book! It's a fascinating account of one scientist's personal and professional journey to the heart of the mind/brain problem: which is primary? Marjorie Woollacott's account of her own scholarly research and her attempts to integrate her profound experiences of perfect awareness through the path of meditation is a tale for our times. She clearly shows the deficiencies of the current scientific model that postulates that awareness is only a function of brain activity, but more than that she integrates modern physics, in the form of quantum mechanics, with the ancient wisdom of the seers of her chosen spiritual tradition, Kashmir Shaivism, and voila! shows them to be identical in essence, if not in expression. As more people pursue meditation practice as a way to generate deep insights into consciousness, Dr. Woollacott's book is an indispensable guide to the contemporary scientific discussion around these issues. The case studies are moving and her personal journey is just as bold as her scientific work must be. This is "the book of a lifetime" for her, the culmination of years of research, study and contemplation. Bravo!

Woollacott has done an amazing job of beginning to document the nature of the ...
Format: Hardcover
Ms. Woollacott has done an amazing job of beginning to document the nature of the conscious substrate that forms the very foundation of our existence, and she does so in a scientifically responsible fashion. An endeavor of this nature by a professional scientist takes not a small amount of courage because this is a topic that is ignored and often ridiculed by many mainstream scientists. The fact that we have attained a large body of evidence that points ineluctably to the reality of non-corporeal consciousness in the universe is enough to warrant serious investigations into this phenomenon, and hopefully this erudite work and others like it will spur further scholarly investigations into this subject of overarching importance. As an added bonus this book is a thoroughly enjoyable and stimulating read; it's hard to put down once you start reading. This is must read for all people who are curious about the ultimate nature of their being, and by all rights that should include everyone.
