In an age of Black Lives Matter, James Baldwin's essays on life in Harlem, the protest novel, movies, and African Americans abroad are as powerful today as when they were first written. With documentaries like I Am Not Your Negro bringing renewed interest to Baldwin's life and work, Notes of a Native Son serves as a valuable introduction.

Written during the 1940s and early 1950s, when Baldwin was only in his twenties, the essays collected in Notes of a Native Son capture a view of black life and black thought at the dawn of the civil rights movement and as the movement slowly gained strength through the words of one of the most captivating essayists and foremost intellectuals of that era. Writing as an artist, activist, and social critic, Baldwin probes the complex condition of being black in America. With a keen eye, he examines everything from the significance of the protest novel to the motives and circumstances of the many black expatriates of the time, from his home in "The Harlem Ghetto" to a sobering "Journey to Atlanta."

Notes of a Native Son inaugurated Baldwin as one of the leading interpreters of the dramatic social changes erupting in the United States in the twentieth century, and many of his observations have proven almost prophetic. His criticism on topics such as the paternalism of white progressives or on his own friend Richard Wright's work is pointed and unabashed. He was also one of the few writing on race at the time who addressed the issue with a powerful mixture of outrage at the gross physical and political violence against black citizens and measured understanding of their oppressors, which helped awaken a white audience to the injustices under their noses. Naturally, this combination of brazen criticism and unconventional empathy for white readers won Baldwin as much condemnation as praise.

Notes is the book that established Baldwin's voice as a social critic, and it remains one of his most admired works. The essays collected here create a cohesive sketch of black America and reveal an intimate portrait of Baldwin's own search for identity as an artist, as a black man, and as an American.

This is a lightweight and perfect for golf! Looks like a much more expensive golf shirt. My husband loved it.

I get tons of compliments about this pullover
Color: Navy, Size: XX-Large
I really like this pullover! A clothing steamer got the wrinkles out from the shipping process, and it hasn't wrinkled at all since then. It's lightweight, and allows my arms to move freely. The fabric feels good against my skin, and the color looks pretty much exactly as it looks on line. I wear an XXL, and it fits exactly as it should. I love the look of the mock neck collar, it's stylish and works well over a regular collared shirt. The quality is solid, and it's absolutely worth the price. No hesitation about ordering more.

Runs small, rough on the inside
Color: Misty Blue, Size: X-Large, Color: Misty Blue, Size: X-Large
Basic performance half button pullover that looks great but just isn't quite worth the money. The polyester material will protect you from light rain and wick the moisture away, but everything else about it feels a little bit low rent. The plastic snaps on the collar are similar in quality to a cheap, disposable poncho. The interior is pretty scratchy and catches on the rough skin on the back of my elbow. Fit is a little snug and for 8% spandex there's just not much stretch. Misty blue color is attractive, but not enough to overcome the middling construction and build quality. Feels very similar to the underwhelming jackets I've 'earned' from my employer for meeting some sort of corporate milestone. If this were $25 I'd give it an extra star. For the list price you can find much better stuff from much better brands if you shop the sales.

Lightweight Layer That Works
Color: Navy, Size: XX-Large
This pullover has been a solid option for cooler days without feeling bulky or restrictive. The lightweight fabric is breathable and comfortable, especially for movement, and it works well both on the golf course and for casual wear. The mock neck and half-button design give it a slightly polished look, while the pockets are genuinely useful and not just decorative. It fits true to size and layers easily over a tee or under a vest. Overall, it’s a practical and comfortable piece for active or everyday wear.

Fits and looks great
Color: Black, Size: Large
This golf pullover will be great for the upcoming golf season. The fit (Large) is excellent. The sleeves may be on the long side for some, but they can easily be pushed up the arm or cuffed on the arm. The chest and shoulders fit like a tailor-made pullover. The length is shorter than a normal pullover because it is meant for golfing. So kudos here. The material seems durable and the snaps work better than buttons or a zipper. The material seems comfortable and durable. I give this pullover high marks and will get a lot of use wearing it on the course.
