The landmark, original publication of Allen Ginsberg's HOWL & Other Poems

HOWL & Other Poems, the prophetic book that launched the Beat Generation, was published by Lawrence Ferlinghetti at City Lights Books in 1956. Considered the single most influential work of post-WWII United States poetry, the City Lights edition of HOWL has remained in print for more than 60 years, with well over 1,000,000 copies in print.

A strident critique of middle-class complacency, consumerism, and capitalist militarism, HOWL also celebrates the pleasures and freedoms of the physical world, including a tribute to homosexual love. In addition to "Howl," poems in the book include: "A Supermarket in California," "Sunflower Sutra," "America," "In the Baggage Room at Greyhound," "Transcription of Organ Music," and "Wild Orphan," among others.

A History of HOWL

City Lights founder Lawrence Ferlinghetti first heard Allen Ginsberg read "Howl" at the Six Gallery event in San Francisco, 1955, which featured writers Philip Lamantia, Gary Snyder, Philip Whalen, and Michael McClure, introduced by poet Kenneth Rexroth. Jack Kerouac was present, but did not read, encouraging and cheering the other poets on. Ferlinghetti was so impressed by Ginsberg's performance, he immediately telegrammed him, referencing Ralph Waldo Emerson's response to Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass, "I greet you at the beginning of a great career. When do I get the manuscript?"

When the first edition of HOWL arrived from its British printers, it was seized almost immediately by U.S. Customs, and shortly thereafter the San Francisco police arrested its publisher and editor, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, together with the City Lights Bookstore manager, Shigeyoshi Murao. The two were charged with disseminating obscene literature, and the case was sent to trial. Ferlinghetti partnered with the ACLU to launch a defense of HOWL, and a parade of distinguished literary and academic witnesses appeared in court to persuade the judge of its merits. In the end, famously conservative Judge Clayton Horn ruled that the poem was not obscene, but rather, as he stated emphatically, HOWL was a work of "redeeming social significance."

The landmark decision signaled a sea change in American culture, and the City Lights edition of HOWL became a vital cornerstone in the ongoing struggle for free expression and representation. It continues to attract generation after generation of readers.

"It is the poet, Allen Ginsberg, who has gone, in his own body, through the horrifying experiences described from life in these pages."--William Carlos Williams

"Ginsberg is both tragic and dynamic, a lyrical genius . . . probably the single greatest influence on American poetical voice since Whitman."--Bob Dylan

"Not only did he give us love and poetry, he reminded us of our civic duty to use our voice."--Patti Smith

"Howl was Allen's metamorphosis from quiet, brilliant, burning bohemian scholar trapped by his flames and repressions to epic vocal bard."--Michael McClure

Comfortable, relaxed fit semi-dress suit that fits true to size. Don't round up or down in size.
This suit fits true to size. We got the 9-10 size in white/tan for our above average height 7 year old, and the suit was just a little big (te Amazon algorithm recommended 9-10 based on past purchases and timing. He is the large side of his 2nd grade class, despite being one of the youngest, so I would say this suit would start fitting an average 8.5-9 year old boy. The fabric is a relaxed summer fabric, so good for semi-dress relaxed events. Our tan suit (and from the weathered gray/blue/green images, I assume all of the suits) seems like a casual menswear commercial shoot. The fabric isn't scratchy and our son said it is comfortable. It includes the picket flower, but I didn't think much of that plastic bloom.

Really cute suit for my son. Worth the price.
Color: Grey, Size: 10-11 Years, Color: Grey, Size: 10-11 Years
My son says he likes the color. He is 10 and we ordered the size 10 to 11 however he’s on the smaller side for 10 and he definitely has some room to grow so it will last us a while and it looks a little baggy on them for right now. However, the fabric is good quality. We like that it comes with a pocket square built-in and also the boutonniere for fancy occasions. I think this would be great for a wedding party or other occasions where you’d need more inexpensive but matching suits. Fabric quality reflects the price. The material is ok, but not gonna be an heirloom that’s passed down or anything. In the picture, he had shoved it into his clothes drawers and so it’s all wrinkled, but it actually does look great when it isn’t wrinkly. He’s been wearing this every week to Church on Sunday.

Good quality suit for kids
Color: Grey, Size: 10-11 Years, Color: Grey, Size: 10-11 Years
Comfortable, good-quality cotton/linen blend suit for kids. The suit is lined and he was excited that it has an inner pocket for a pen. I believe the suit fits true to size. In the photo I'm attaching, the suit is too large. I'll explain. We ordered a size 10-11 years, but my son is 9 years old. The suit size is actually a 150 (cm). My 9 year old son is currently 55 inches tall and weighs #61. His height of 55 inches translates to 140 cm - which explains why this is a little big/roomy on him. The product page has a size chart which translates the sizing in years (e.g. 9-10 years) into centimeters. If you measure your child before your order it will help you know what size to order. We haven’t ironed ours yet but plan to iron it when he's ready to wear it. We thought about exchanging it for the next size smaller but it's fall right now and this suit will be better for him in the spring/summer. We were pleased to see that this is a “normal” looking suit. Some of the dressy or fashionable clothes have some quirky or unusual elements to them. All in all, we’re pleased with this suit.

Summer wedding kids suit
Color: Navy, Size: 10 Years, Color: Navy, Size: 10 Years
Bought this suit for my son in the 10 youth size and honestly was pleasantly surprised by the quality for the price. The navy color looks sharp and dressy without being too stiff or uncomfortable. The material has a little stretch, which helped it fit nicely and made it comfortable for him to move around in. The adjustable waist was a huge plus, especially for growing kids. It fit true to size overall, though the blazer sleeves were slightly long on my son. The pants had a nice slim look without being too tight. We paired it with white sneakers for a more modern look and it came out adorable. This would be perfect for weddings, graduations, concerts, communion, school events, or family photos. Overall, very happy with the purchase and would definitely buy again.
