The Rough & Wojtyla album Side R & Side W offers a 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle that recreates a monochromatic landscape. Drones are supported by tentative jazz drum beats, and just when you think you have found some stability in the listening, ruptures happen and multiply. In perfect harmony, the two musicians don't take themselves seriously; they saturate their sonic world with long abstruse silences, before returning more furiously into the barely hidden chaos. The listener is constantly pushed around, always looking for something to hang on to without ever finding it. But concretely, what might one find in the music? Maybe Walter Ruttman and his Weekend (1930)? Or maybe Albert Ayler? Some Stockhausen? When the fury of the sax swirls around the siren, it's a bit of Cluster taking a trip to the land of free-jazz that rips the thick veil of the oppressing yet liberating first part. Or this disco rocket, which for a very precise 15 seconds would have you believe that expectations might be met. But nothing that comes next resembles what has just crumbled. The duo is enjoying itself with this collage, this assembly of sonic decadence where nothing holds, not even the bearing walls. This structure is ready to crumble at any moment. The krautrock-inspired electro passages get entangled, but the experience of the two musicians prevents them from falling into the too obvious influence of Can's Tago Mago (1971). So what to do now? What is there to understand when the cellos cry on this fragment of post-rock without reference? The tapes are altered, sped up, it sways and it dances as if it's inside a schizophrenic brain that can't stop spinning. This record's 35 minutes will just hit you across the head. The music meanders constantly; funk, jazz, rock, all incorporated without an apparent link. The constant pace of ruptures leaves you almost dizzy. But this is not random, the whole is a serious abstract or cubic masterpiece you can't keep your eyes off of in fear of missing a nuance or a sound. And maybe that's it and nothing else: art. The capacity to take someone's gaze and direct it towards an incomprehensible evidence. Personnel: Robert G. Since I began practicing Passage Meditation (meditating on a prayer or sacred poem as my focus of concentration) I enjoy reading this book at bedtime for inspiration. I find that when certain prayers or poems resonate with me, stanzas from them will come to me during the day. Some of them I memorize quicker than others. I appreciate this book for having so many from so many traditions compiled and translated so beautifully. At the back of the book you can look them up by category, such as prayers for courage, or fear, etc. I am surprised at how many I have memorized, and how much they affect my thoughts throughout the day.

Make your life a work of art
Format: Kindle
These passages drawn from all the world's great spiritual traditions coupled with enthusiastic sustained practice of Eknath Easwaran s 8point program can provide depth and meaning to one's life and a greater understanding of what the check it is we are all doing here on this beautiful yet long suffering planet. Don't be thrown off by the quiet delivery or the religious stuff -- it's always common sense experience based and never heavy handed. You'll get as much out of it as you put into it. The people that have used this form of meditation and are associated w the blue mountain center are some of the most extraordinary humble people you will ever meet. Good luck.

A Beautiful Resource

Eknath Easwaran was a wonderful teacher who taught passage meditation, memorizing and repeating to oneself sacred writings. These writings are drawn from many of the great religious traditions. In the last few years of my aging mother's life, she and I spent many hours reading these passages together, meditating on them, and discussing them. We had our favorites and when one of us was travelling, we would agree to meditate on one or two particular ones at the same time wherever we were. At her death, I recited many of these passages to her to bring her peace. She died more than a decade ago but these passages still evoke that beautiful time in my mind and I am grateful for this beautiful resource of passages. I find that everything in this book is a source of peace when I read and meditation on it.

Printed version would have been better

The reason I gave "God Makes the Rivers Flow" 4-stars, instead of 5-stars, is a reflection on my choice to get the Kindle Edition. I love my Kindle. But, this book would be better to flip though, not to read like a novel. I think a printed version would have been a better choice.
I have a lot of respect for Eknath Easwaran. He did not just tolerate diversity, he genuinely valued diversity. His works are a great way to bring traditions and peoples together, not only by showing what they have in common (although that is valuable too), but by cerebrating the ways that they differ. His works demonstrate that each tradition has noticed something about God that others did not, and they all add value to humanity's global relationship with God. "God Makes the Rivers Flow" is a great example of that.
