The SmartAVI UXGA/Audio/IR/RS-232 Point-to-Multi-Point CAT5 Extender is a versatile, high-performance solution designed to extend a complete AV and control signal set across multiple rooms or zones. Built around the XT400 concept, this 4-Port Transmitter enables seamless distribution of UXGA video, multi-channel audio, infrared (IR) remote control signals, and RS-232 command traffic over standard Category 5 (UTP) cables. Ideal for classrooms, boardrooms, digital signage networks, and home theater installations, it simplifies cabling while delivering reliable, synchronized multimedia experiences at a distance.

Whether you’re integrating a multi-display configuration in a university campus, extending a presentation setup in a corporate environment, or enabling centralized control of AV devices in a hospitality space, this extender provides scalable, plug-and-play performance. The solution supports bidirectional RS-232 communication so you can issue commands to single devices or broadcast control across multiple displays, projectors, or media players from a single control point. With IR pass-through, you can remotely operate set-top boxes, media players, and other IR-controlled devices for a truly centralized experience without being tethered to a single location.

  • Wide-format UXGA extension over CAT5: Extends high-resolution UXGA video (up to 1600x1200 at 60 Hz) from a local source to up to four remote locations over standard Category 5 cables, reducing the need for bulky, expensive fiber or HDMI routing in multi-room setups.
  • Integrated audio and flexible signal transport: Supports analog audio alongside video, enabling synchronized audio playback across multiple zones. The design accommodates common AV playback configurations where location-specific speakers or sound systems are required.
  • Bidirectional RS-232 control and IR pass-through: Send and receive serial commands across all connected locations, enabling centralized control of displays, projectors, scalers, and media players. IR pass-through lets you remotely reconstruct a full control ecosystem for each zone without adding extra cabling.
  • Point-to-multi-point topology with scalable expansion: Start with a transmitter at the source and connect up to four remote locations, with the option to expand the network as needs grow. The system is designed to be easy to install, manage, and expand, reducing both upfront and ongoing costs.
  • Plug-and-play installation and reliable performance: Engineered for simple deployment with minimal configuration. The robust design and status indicators help technicians quickly diagnose issues, ensuring dependable operation in education, corporate, or entertainment environments.

Technical Details of SmartAVI UXGA/Audio/IR/RS-232 Point-to-Multi-Point CAT5 Extender, 4-Port Transmitter

  • Signal support: UXGA video (up to 1600x1200 @ 60 Hz) and multi-channel analog audio transported over CAT5 UTP cables, with IR and RS-232 control signals included in the same link.
  • Topology: Point-to-multi-point extender with a single transmitter feeding up to four remote receivers or display locations. Ideal for multi-room distribution where centralized control is essential.

how to install SmartAVI UXGA/Audio/IR/RS-232 Point-to-Multi-Point CAT5 Extender, 4-Port Transmitter

Install in a few straightforward steps to begin distributing UXGA video, audio, IR, and RS-232 signals across four remote locations. Plan your layout by identifying the source device, the four target displays or control points, and the path for CAT5 cabling. Ensure power supplies are ready for both the transmitter and each remote unit. Once wired, you can configure the system with minimal setup and begin testing to verify signal integrity and control responsiveness.

  • Plan the layout: Determine the location of the video source and the four remote destinations. Lay out the CAT5 runs between the transmitter and each remote location. Ensure there is a convenient power source for the transmitter and each remote unit if required by your model configuration.
  • Connect the video source: Attach the UXGA video output from your computer, scaler, or media player to the transmitter’s video input using a standard VGA or UXGA cable. Verify secure connections at the source end.
  • Run CAT5 cables: Run a CAT5 UTP cable from the transmitter to each remote location. Use solid, properly crimped connectors to minimize signal loss. Do not exceed recommended distances for your resolution to maintain image quality.
  • Attach remote devices and controls: At each remote location, connect the corresponding remote receiver or display unit as specified by the extender’s documentation. Connect any RS-232 devices and IR emitters/receivers as needed for each zone to ensure full control coverage.
  • Power up and test: Apply power to the transmitter and all remote units. Power on the source device and displays, then verify video, audio, and control signals. Use the LED indicators as a quick diagnostic tool to confirm proper operation and promptly address any cabling or connection issues.

Frequently asked questions

  • What signals does this extender support? It supports UXGA video, analog audio, IR remote control signals, and RS-232 serial data across up to four remote locations using CAT5 cables.
  • How many locations can I extend to? The transmitter can distribute signals to up to four remote locations in a point-to-multi-point configuration, making it suitable for multi-room or multi-display setups.
  • What cable do I need? Standard Category 5 (UTP) Ethernet cables are used for the signal runs between the transmitter and each remote location. Longer runs or higher resolutions may require careful cable management to preserve signal quality.
  • Do I need additional hardware to use this extender? You will need a corresponding remote receiver or display unit for each location, plus appropriate power supplies. No specialized software is required; the system is designed for plug-and-play operation with straightforward cabling.
  • Can I control devices from multiple locations? Yes, the extender supports bidirectional RS-232 control, enabling you to issue commands from a central control point to any single device or broadcast commands across multiple devices in different zones. IR pass-through further enhances centralized control capabilities.
  • Is there a latency impact when using this extender? As with any signal extension over CAT5, there may be a slight latency inherent to long cable runs or high-resolution signals. The XT400-based design aims to minimize latency to preserve real-time interactivity for control and display operations.
  • What about compatibility with existing AV gear? The extender is designed to integrate with standard UXGA sources, analog audio configurations, and commonly used IR and RS-232 control devices. Always verify compatibility with your specific models and ensure proper cabling within recommended distance parameters for the chosen resolution.

loud but in a good way
Size: 4.5"
Love these crazy loud squeeky balls. I bought two a bit too big but the dogs still love them. Yes, they will drive you insane but the dogs love them so much it's worth it watching the pups enjoy the balls. They are strong and safe as long as they aren't too small for your dogs mouth.

Great for aggressive chewers - Great for clean teeth
I never thought these would stand up to my 60lb pittie puppy's chewing. But they are far and away her favorite toy and are holding up beautifully. One squeaker insert bit the dust -- which is not bad since it gives us one silent one. But otherwise they are holding up superbly to her powerful jaws. We have tried a lot of toys. So far, all the "for aggressive chewers" toys have been torn apart within days if we are lucky -- usually it's minutes. But these balls show little-to-no sign of wear. The squeakers are very loud which she loves can get a bit tiresome. So, as I mentioned, having one silent one is a great option. And she really likes the texture. She loves them so much, we bought a second set and will probably buy a third to have in reserve. (We are realistic and don't expect them to last forever.) All I have to say is "where's spiky ball" and she instantly stops what she is doing and goes on the hunt. A great buy!! (NOTE: It's been almost three months and one is just beginning to show some damage. Given that she plays with them non-stop, they've showed amazing durability. And everyone comments on how clean and beautiful her teeth are. I don't brush them or give her dental treats. So it has to be these balls!!)

Good sturdy ball for aggressive chewer
Size: 4.5"
Nice heavy duty ball that my 7 yr old pitbull can chew on and not destroy it in 2 minutes. Wish that could get 3 for the cost but whatever. Nice bright colors . Good size that he won't choke on it .
