The I 400 class were submersible aircraft carriers capable of carrying three Aichi M6A Seiran floatplanes in a watertight hangar forward of the conning tower, designed to attack the Panama Canal and the US mainland.

At 122 metres long with a range of 37,500 nautical miles, they could circumnavigate the globe one and a half times without refuelling.
