Константинос Кавафіс (1863—1933) — видатний грецький поет ХХ ст., творчість якого відкрила світу новогрецьку літературу. Розквіт його творчості припав саме на ХХ ст., хоча писав він здебільшого про елліністичну епоху або Візантію. Напевне, це можна пояснити тим, що Кавафіс народився і прожив більшу частину свого життя в Александрії, яка вважається своєрідним символом еллінізму, відіграючи особливу роль у розвитку культури, науки та мистецтва цього періоду. Може, саме тому поету вдалося органічно поєднати в своїй творчості елементи давньої грецької традиції з автентичною новогрецькою культурною традицією і таким чином накреслити основні вектори розвитку грецької поезії ХХ століття.
