Zeventien jaar na een wereldwijde nucleaire ramp, belandt de speler in een bijna onherkenbaar en verwilderd maar prachtig Hope County, Montana. Na de chaos begon het normale leven hier stilaan terug te keren, tot de overlevenden te maken kregen met een nieuw kwaad: The Twins, Mickey en Lou, leiders van de genadeloze Highwaymen bende. Deze tweelingzussen zijn opgegroeid zonder wetten of regels en zijn vastberaden om de overlevenden te beroven van al hun bezittingen. Aan spelers de taak om daar een stokje voor te steken.

Spelers bereiden de strijd tegen The Twins voor in thuisbasis Prosperity. Hier starten spelers, samen met de overlevenden, een eigen community, maken ze wapens en voertuigen en trainen ze hun Guns for Hire, onder wie een aantal bekende gezichten. Deze thuisbasis wordt gedurende de game verder uitgebouwd en biedt zo meer mogelijkheden om krachtigere wapens en uitrusting te maken. De thuisbasis is eveneens het startpunt voor Expeditions. Deze avonturen spelen zich af op uiteenlopende, memorabele locaties in de Verenigde Staten. Daar is het aan spelers om waardevolle materialen veilig te stellen en zo snel mogelijk weer weg te glippen, terug naar Hope County.

Far Cry New Dawn wordt ontwikkeld door Ubisoft Montreal in samenwerking met Ubisoft Shanghai, Ubisoft Kiev en Ubisoft Bucharest. Dit stand-alone vervolg op Far Cry 5 brengt voor het eerst een post-apocalyptische setting naar de Far Cry-serie. Spelers verzamelen een divers gezelschap Guns en Fangs for Hire of nodigen een vriend uit om hen te helpen in coöp en beleven zo de wildste Far Cry-avonturen tot nu toe.
