H2Ocean True Seawater Refractometer

H2Ocean True Seawater Refractometer is used for the accurate measurement of the true salinity and specific gravity of natural seawater by refractive index.

A refractometer truly made for sea water

  • Calibrated specifically for the refractive index of natural sea water
  • Accurate auto temperature compensation (ATC)
  • Easy to read display

The D-D True Seawater Refractometer is a handheld instrument for the measurement of the TRUE Salinity and Specific Gravity (S.G.) of sea water by refractive index. Almost all other handheld saltwater refractometers available to the hobby are designed and calibrated for the testing of brine solutions (i.e. sodium chloride) and are not calibrated for the refractive index of natural sea water. Even though the largest percentage of salt in the sea is sodium chloride, the presence of other significant ions such as magnesium and calcium in natural sea water results in a different refractive index relative to that of brine. A standard salt (brine) refractometer will therefore not give the correct salinity for natural sea water (NSW) and a conversion factor must be applied. After extensive development, D-D’s new ATC refractometer addresses this issue as the scale is calibrated for seawatergiving true salinity results for aquarium use when correctly calibrated and greater accuracy than previously attainable.

Easier to Read

One of the other problems with most refractometers is that the scale displayed normally reads from 0-100ppt when we are really only interested in the region from 30-40ppt. Our new Seawater Refractometer has therefore been specifically designed to read from 0-40ppt which gives you 2.5 times the resolution of a normal 0-100 scale.

Auto Temperature Compensation (ATC)

There is a lot of misunderstanding concerning the way the ATC feature works and its effect on the refractometer at different ambient room temperatures.

Salinity is a measurement of a mass of salt in a mass of water and therefore does not vary with temperature however a refractometer does not measure salinity directly but measures the refractive index which is then displayed as salinity. The refractive index of a solution does vary with temperature therefore the reading that you measure with a refractometer is always temperature dependant.

An ATC refractometer has a bimetal strip inside the instrument that moves the reading scale as the temperature changes to compensate for the change in refractive index. What people do not generally understand is that it is the temperature of the instrument and not the water temperature that is important as the small sample of water used for testing will equilibrate within seconds to the temperature of the refractometer.

Once correctly calibrated at the set calibration temperature of 20oC the refractometer can then be used in environments where the ambient temperature and therefore instrument temperature would heat up or cool down within the range of the ATC which is between 10 and 30 centigrade.

Calibration

Calibration should always be carried out with the instrument at 20C, which is close to the average room temperature in most cases. Allow the refractometer to stand at this temperature for 30 minutes to equilibrate.

The D-D refractometer is designed with a copper body which is more expensive to manufacture but responds faster to ambient temperature changes than other materials.

Note that the refractive index is also dependant on the wavelength of light, therefore a light source closest to daylight should be used.

D-D refractometers are calibrated at 20C and so the calculated specific gravity at 35ppt displays a reading of 1.0266. This is the equivalent to a specific gravity reading of 1.0264 for a water sample temperature of 25C using a standard hydrometer that has a calibration temperature of 77F or 25C.

Good product for the price.
Size: 27"/QHD/200Hz
This monitor works great. I’ve used it for a while now and I haven’t had issues with this one. Screen size is good and refresh rate isn’t bad either.

Love These Monitors - Nothing But Love/Performance Here!
First and foremost, yes these are the BEST budget CURVED monitors I felt deservers my time, effort and money. I've been into electronics and computers since the beginning of BBS's. Lol. I wanted to upgrade and bought the dual setup during Amazon day. Blew me away. Couple tips I'll share so that you can get the Most out of these monitors. Tips: 1 - Don't buy CRAP cables. DON'T. Look at the specs, the refresh rates and what they are capable of - speed!!!; 2 - Make sure you have a GOOD quality GPU. If not you won't even be able to enjoy the investment of the these monitors. Invest in a GPU of at LEAST 8GB 1080p min with BOTH DP and HDMI ports.; 3 - With that being said, these monitors use MST!! Daisy chain them together off the DP port for an AMAZING viewing pleasure. If not, you CAN you both ports. Run your main to from the DP port (WAY BETTER quality than the HDMI) and the other using the HDMI 1.2. Again, CABLES ARE IMPORTANT. Crap cables = degregaged signal/sound loss. 4 - When you get it/them make SURE your GPU drivers are up to date. Configure on your operating system and BOOM.. ready to rock. I researched PLENTY of options and I'm ESTACTIC about these. I believe the deal I got was UNREAL for the price, QHD monitors and almost ..almost everything I needed. 1440p - incredible. Ebay/AMZ for a GOOD GPU card and cables.. well worth your time.

Great value and great monitor
Size: 27"/QHD/200Hz
As a note to new buyers: a chemical-like odor may be emitted from your monitor's exhaust for the first 2-3 weeks--at least mine did. I did some research and this was likely attributed to some cleaning chemicals from the factory, and it is burning off from the heat of the monitor. Simply have good ventilation in your room, and the odor should dissipate in 2-3 weeks. I've had this monitor for over a year now, and there is no odor anymore. Now, for the actual review: This monitor is great quality for the price! Not perfect, as I've found this monitor doesn't display smooth gradients of dark very well. For example, when I'm in a dark room in a video game, the dark ambient colors show slightly pixelated rather than smoothly blended. Other than that, this monitor works like a charm! Colors are great, and monitor settings are easily adjustable. One complaint I have is that I can't change the monitor's brightness using the Windows OS' brightness settings--you have to change the brightness/contrast using the monitor's buttons.
