DESCRIPTION: This 1980s heavy wool peacoat is a masterclass in enduring design. Crafted from robust, tightly woven wool, it offers exceptional warmth and resilience against the harshest winter conditions. The deep navy exterior and contrasting red wool interior highlight its quality construction, while the classic double-breasted silhouette and high collar provide added protection from wind and cold. Designed for longevity, this coat embodies the durability and functionality that made the peacoat a naval essential—and a timeless outerwear staple.
HISTORY: Originating in the navies of Europe and the United States during the 18th century, the pea coat was conceived as a practical garment for sailors braving harsh maritime conditions. Crafted from dense, heavy wool, it offered warmth and resilience against wind and spray, while its double-breasted front and broad lapels provided essential protection in unforgiving seas.
Over time, this utilitarian design transcended its military roots to become a cornerstone of classic outerwear. Its enduring appeal lies in a harmonious blend of function and form—durability, elegance, and versatility—qualities that have secured its place in wardrobes across generations.
This particular example, rendered in deep navy wool, preserves the defining characteristics of the original: robust construction, timeless silhouette, and a heritage steeped in naval tradition.
